Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN codes) and Engine Codes can be very important in the selection of certain sets. Check your owner's manual for the location of your VIN or engine code. VIN number plates are usually found on the driver's side dash and/or the driver's side door post. Engine codes are stamped on the engine block or are on plates in the engine compartment.
To determine the VIN code for domestic vehicles, keep the following in mind:
For Chrysler/Dodge, Ford and GM: 1980 and prior use the 5th character in the VIN code. 1981 and later use the 8th character.
For AMC/Eagle (except Jeep): 1980 and prior use the 7th character in the VIN code. 1981 to 1988 use the 4th character. 1989 and later use the 8th character.
For Jeep: 1974 and prior (up to SN 100000) use the 8th character in the VIN code. 1974 to 1980 (from SN 100000) use the 7th character. 1981 to 1988 use the 4th character. 1989 and later use the 8th character.
